Parks and Gardens in Norwich

A litte bit of history
With over 150 green spaces in Norwich, including 59 natural areas, 95 open spaces and 23 parks, it's not surprising that a few of these are in, or close to, the Golden Triangle area.

Many of these parks are now of historical interest and remain true to the original plans. At the beginning of the 20th century several individuals, societies and the city council (then known as the Norwich Corporation) began buying and leasing land with the aim of developing open spaces with general public access.

There had been, up until this time, limited public space (Chapelfield Gardens being the exception, opened in November 1880) for the population of Norwich, which had undergone rapid growth between 1800 and 1900.

Following the First World War the Corporation decided to construct a series of formal parks as a means of unemployment relief.  One of the first to open was Heigham Park.  Several more were constructed and opened during the 1920s and 30s.

Chapelfield Gardens is an oasis of calm and tranquillity within the old city walls. It is the regular site for the Lord Mayors Celebration funfair. Well known for the beautiful Spring displays of crocuses and daffodils, it is named because it was once the field of St Mary's Chapel: Chapel Field, now Chapelfield. It was opened to the public in 1880.
